How Long do Same Day Implants Last?

Same day implants have taken implant dentistry to a whole new level, achieving in a single day what it has taken cosmetic dentists months to achieve in the past. In addition, same day implants offer hope to those that think they can’t get dental implants due to significant bone loss or without a long and uncomfortable bone grafting procedure.

Many who have struggled with dentures or other restorations may think that same day implants sound too good to be true. What is the catch?

Long-lasting tooth replacement

With same day implants, you can save time and money without sacrificing your smile. When the procedure is performed correctly and the implants are properly cared for, your implants can last for many decades. Their durability is not compromised in the slightest by the expedited method in which the new teeth are implanted.

There are certain factors that could impact the durability of your same day implants. Patients who do not follow their post-procedural instructions, including dietary restrictions, in the early days after the implants are placed can affect the ability of these implants to remain in top condition long term. Some lifestyle habits, such as heavy alcohol use and smoking can also impact their longevity. Implants, like natural teeth, also require daily care, including brushing and flossing.

What are same day implants?

Same day implants are also referred to as “All on Four®” dental implants. These teeth are attached to the bone by just four implant posts, which can be positioned to accommodate bone loss common with patients that have lost their natural teeth. This eliminates the need for the lengthy and painful bone grafting process that involves multiple appointments, many months of treatment and additional time off work to recover from the procedures.

The procedure involves 3D imaging that allows us to see precisely how much bone is available to accept the implant posts. This state-of-the-art imaging also helps to prevent damage to the sinus cavity and nerve canals as the teeth are placed. It also allows for secure placement of the implants, even when bone structure is minimal.

Who can have same day implants?

Many patients are able to enjoy the benefits of same day dental implants. There are some medical conditions that could increase your risk during and after the procedure, such as diabetes, heart disease or bleeding disorders. Before your procedure, our staff will take a full medical history and discuss any potential risks that would affect candidacy.

The implants are placed into the mouth under local anesthesia and sedation. Patients may experience some post-operative discomfort, which can usually be managed effectively using oral pain medication. Most patients are able to return to work and other activities within a few days after initial healing takes place. Patients will have a number of follow-up appointments after the procedure to ensure the implants are integrating with the natural bone and healing properly.

Same day implants offer myriad benefits over traditional dental implants, including shorter procedure time, lower cost and the ability to place the implants without a bone graft.
